Driving Sustainability

There is a growing realization that the real barrier to creating sustainable organizations is not the lack of technical know-how but the mindsets of those in organizations at all levels to enable it. This is not due to a lack of appreciation of the need for change, but more a lack of organizational permission to take longer-term decisions based on broader systems-thinking approaches.

In this issue we start our exploration of this topic with a wonderful interview with one of the greatest living management thinkers, Henry Mintzberg, who has been focusing on the broader challenges of societal engagement, the pivotal role of what he terms the plural sector.

Exploding the myths around ESG and how to embed the S and the G, as well as the E, in organizations is tackled by a trio from Rotman School of Management; this is further explored by former head of corporate sustainability at a major UK retailer, and now professor of sustainability at Cranfield, Rosina Watson; Natalie Beinisch shares the story of how she has built a more sustainable organizational approach in Nigeria.
